Somalia: Presidential Candidate Nasa Ige Promises to Appoint Female Prime Minister if Elected.

MOGADISHU – Somali presidential candidate Nasa Ige has stirred national attention with a bold and progressive promise ahead of the 2026 elections: if elected, he will appoint a female Prime Minister — a move he says reflects his commitment to inclusive governance.

Nasa Ige, who recently confirmed his candidacy, said his vision focuses on strengthening the role of women and youth in Somalia’s political future. Speaking at a welcoming event in Sweden, he told reporters that true national progress cannot be achieved without giving women a meaningful place in leadership.

According to him, the country needs “a new political approach that reflects the strength and potential of its people,” adding that his administration would prioritize inclusion and power-sharing.

The announcement has been met with widespread praise, particularly among Somali women and youth, both at home and in the diaspora. Many have hailed the promise as historic, noting that few Somali politicians have dared to make such a direct public commitment to appointing women in top leadership roles.
