Brussels, Belgium — Somali journalist Mohamed Yusuf Bakayle has been elected Chairperson of the Somali Diaspora Journalists Association (SDJA) following an election held on 20 February 2026.
The election was conducted online and brought together nearly 150 Somali journalists living and working in different countries. As part of the process, 15 members of the association also gathered in person in Brussels, Belgium.
Bakayle, a Somali journalist based in Denmark, will lead the association for a two-year term. Members also elected a Secretary and a 15-member Leadership Board to work alongside the Chairperson in leading and developing the organization.
SDJA is an independent association that connects, represents and supports Somali journalists living and working in diaspora communities around the world. Its work focuses on promoting ethical journalism, defending press freedom, improving journalist safety and creating professional development opportunities for Somali media professionals.
